Sombrero de paja toquilla y tejido de la toquilla
A Panama hat (toquilla straw hat) is a traditional brimmed straw hat of Ecuadorian origin.
The art of weaving the traditional Ecuadorian toquilla hat was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists on 6 December 2012.
We work closely with communities in the provinces of Manabi and Azuay to produce the toquilla straw for the handbags and the Panama hats. Through a closely collaboration we provide feedback, provide fair rates and assure the quality of the products.
In Ecuador’s green foothills & windy highlands, indigenous women elaborate waist band or belt known as “chumbi”, in the Quichua language, or “faja” in Spanish. This intricately hand-woven belt beautifully represents the time-honored tradition of Quechua weaving in high Andean communities and is still commonly used today as part of everyday traditional dress.
